ASU’s Coleman earns 3rd SWAC POTW honor
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – Senior Jamie Coleman has put together an impressive 2016 season earning her third SWAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Wednesday.
Coleman, a marketing major, led all players in digs in both of the Lady Hornets matches last weekend. She had 19 digs in three sets (6.33 digs/set) against Grambling State and 12 digs also in three sets against Ark. Pine Bluff (4.0 digs/set) to extend her streak with 10 or more digs to eight matches.
“This honor is well deserved,” said Penny Lucas-White, Lady Hornets head coach. “Every week she has distinguished herself as being one of the best defensive players in the conference. Her numbers are consistent and continue to stand out a little more.”
This season, she leads the team with 183 digs and a 3.79 digs per set average. Coleman is second in the league only 11 digs behind Allison Woods of Texas Southern.
Earlier this season, Coleman received the SWAC Defensive Player of the Week honors when she totaled 54 digs during the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational to lead all players recording a season-high 27 digs in ASU’s win against Chicago State and 19 digs against Troy and eight versus Savannah State and earning a spot on the all-tournament team.
She has now moved to the fourth spot as an all-time leader in digs amassing 755 digs so far in her career at State. She is only 86 digs away from obtaining the third spot held by former Lady Hornet Roselande Corneille which played in 2009-11.
The Alabama State volleyball team returns to action this weekend in their home opening SWAC conference matches. State will host Mississippi Valley on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on Jackson State in a rematch of the conference tournament on Saturday also at 7 p.m. This weekend is slated as connection weekend as we invite all middle schools and high schools to Lockhart Gym for some exciting SWAC volleyball.
