Auburn women’s golf heads to Cougar Classic

AUBURN, Ala. (auburntigers.com) – The Auburn women’s golf team, ranked 26th in the latest Golfweek release, is set for its third tournament of the fall season as the Tigers travel to Charleston, S.C., for the Cougar Classic.

The tournament runs SundayTuesday at Yeamans Hall Club, which will be set up at par 72, 6,224 yards. This is Auburn’s fifth appearance at the Cougar Classic; their best finish at this event came in 2005 when Auburn finished fourth.

The Tigers will use the same lineup as for the first two events, sending out freshman Elena Hualde, junior Michaela Owen, sophomore Mai Dechathipat, junior Kelli Murphy and freshman Kayley Marschke. That lineup has earned two top-five finishes in their first two events, finishing as runner-up at the Fall Kickoff and earning a fifth-place showing at the Mason Rudolph Championship last month.

Hualde has been a standout in her first two collegiate appearances, tying for medalist honors at the Fall Kickoff and earning a sixth-place finish at the Mason Rudolph. She enters this weekend having posted four straight rounds at even par or better, including a pair of 68s over the two events.

It will be one of the largest fields the Tigers will face this season with 21 teams and 108 golfers participating. Joining Auburn and host College of Charleston will be SEC foes Arkansas, Mississippi State and South Carolina, along with Central Florida, Charleston Southern, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Furman, Indiana, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, NC State, Penn State, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.
