Both Alabama’s Nick Saban and Troy’s Jon Sumrall were named two of the twelve finalists for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. The finalists were released on Tuesday Morning by the Football Writers Association of America and the All-State Sugar Bowl.

Troy Head Football Coach, Jon Sumrall, is the only coach to be named a finalist for the award in both 2022 and 2023.

This season, Sumrall led the Trojans to back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Titles and an eleven-win season. The only other program to win their conference in both 2022 and 2023 was Michigan. Sumrall has also led Troy to a bowl game now in back-to-back seasons. The Trojans will play in the Birmingham Bowl on December 23rd against the Duke Blue Devils. The Trojans’ invitation to the Birmingham Bowl to play Duke makes them the first Sun Belt Team to face a power five opponent in a bowl game.

Nick Saban has led his team to a twelve-win season, an undefeated conference record, and claimed his ninth SEC Title at the University of Alabama. As a result of the success Saban and the Tide have had this season, they earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. This would be Saban and Alabama’s eighth playoff berth during the ten year span of the four team playoff era. Alabama is set to take on top ranked Michigan in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day for a spot in the National Title Game in Houston, Texas on January 8th.

The winner of the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award will be announced on December 20th in Houston.
