A family-owned and operated radio station in Dallas County is celebrating 50 years on the air.

Wal Walx50th Pkg2 “Been doing this for 50 years. My parents started this in 1973 and as a 16 year old kid, I jumped right in.”

Scott Alexander took over his parents’ radio station — and turned 100.9 WALX-FM — into a 10-station radio group.

“WALX started it all. We’ve got our hands full but we love this business,” he said.

“We have three FMs now in Montgomery. Four FMs here along with an AM in Selma. And then we are actually over further west over in Meridian, Mississippi too. We have two FMs over there,” said Paul Alexander.

Wal Walx50th PkgScott’s son Paul grew up in the family radio business. And now he’s the president of Scott Communications.

“Some of my best memories through my childhood is right here at this radio station,” he said.

“I’ve actually got a picture with a pacifier in my mouth in my office so I remind myself all the time that I’ve been doing this a long time.”

The family has already started grooming the next generation of the Alexanders.

Paul Scott Alexander III could join the family’s labor of love — and carry the family legacy — into the next 50 years.

The station’s Golden Anniversary — is Tuesday, December 12th.
