Troy head football coach Gerad Parker names Dontae Wright as defensive coordinator. This finalizes Parker’s on-field staff. Along with being the defensive coordinator, Wright will also serve as the safeties coach.

Most recently before making the move to Troy Wright coached alongside Neal Brown at West Virginia for four seasons. Wright was the safeties coach of the Mountaineers.

During the 2021 season in Big 12 play, Wright helped lead the Mountaineer’s defense to being tied for second in the league in interceptions and third in passing defense. In 2021 the Mountaineers were also ranked 5th in the nation in red zone defense and 18th in fewest first downs allowed.

Wright helped the West Virginia defense to another great year in 2020. That season the Mountaineers led the nation in pass defense, 4th in total defense, 21st in scoring defense, 23rd in interceptions, 24th in pass efficiency defense, and 28th in rushing defense.

Before his time at West Virginia Wright spent two seasons at Western Michigan where he also coached the safeties.

Wright also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech where he helped mentor the specialists and defensive ends.

Two other coaching stops of Wright’s include Morehead State, Centre College, North Alabama, and spent time as a graduate assistant at Kentucky.

Wright spent four years playing college football at Miami (Ohio) where he was a linebacker from 2003- 06. During his time in college Wright was a part of two Mid-American Conference East Division Championship Teams. Wright helped lead the RedHawks to an outright conference title in 2003.

Wright is a native of Louisa, Kentucky and is married to the former Jillian Slone, and the couple is expecting their first child in June.
