Gov. Kay Ivey plants tree, awards student in Arbor Day celebration
Gov. Kay Ivey, along with the Alabama Urban Forestry Association, are celebrating Arbor Day at the Alabama Capitol.
Tuesday, Ivey helped plant a tree on the Capitol grounds and honored the student who won the Arbor Day Poster Contest.
This year’s theme is “Trees Are Terrific In Cities And Towns.” There were more than 2,300 submissions for the poster contest. McKenzie Cloud of Goldsmith-Schiffman Elementary School in Huntsville was the winner.
“I do the picture inside of a circle to make it look like I was capturing it through a lens or use watercolors markers and acrylic paints to capture the different textures of trees and buildings. Planting trees, especially in cities and towns, it’s a simple way to take care of our planet and together we can all make a difference,” McKenzie said.
She and the runner-up winners helped Ivey plant the tree.
