Area educators react to school cell phone ban proposal

From the West Alabama Newsroom–

Dallas County Superintendent Anthony Sampson says he’s in support of the proposed ban.

He says cell phones have become an unnecessary distraction in schools. And he wants students in the school district — locked-in to learning.

Cellphone“A cell phone is one of those tools if used the wrong way can be a distraction to the learning environment,” said Sampson.

“Students have computers. We’re a one to one district. So, anything that’s tech-based or web-based that a student needs to have access to they can get it on a device that we’re providing as a district.”

“I’m 50-50 on it,” said Karen Langston of Selma.

Langston has grandchildren in public and private schools in S

elma.

“I don’t want them to have phones just to mess off and you know, cheat on tests and things and text friends. But, with school shootings, kids need their cell phones.”

Cell phone ban bills have been introduced in both the Alabama House and Senate.
