Pike Road Girls Golf team honored for fourth straight title

The Pike Road girls golf team received recognition Monday for their unprecedented fourth straight state championship.

Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone and the town council presented the team with a proclamation honoring their achievement.

Among the team members honored was senior Lauryn Leonard, who will continue her golf career at Southern University. She hopes to eventually compete on the professional tour. Leonard also encouraged future Pike Road Patriots to continue the winning tradition after she graduates

“Never give up,” Leonard said. “When you doubt yourself, just trust and believe in yourself and ask God for your help, and because he’s always with you, no matter what, so just ask him to be there. And yeah, stay rooted in your faith and practice every single day.”

Pike Road girls golf head coach Ted White emphasized the importance of daily dedication and continuous improvement.

“I encourage them to practice, always seek excellence. Always try to get better every day,” White said. “Whatever it is you do, golf or any endeavor that you might have, just seek excellence and just shoot for it every day cause it won’t happen overnight.”

The Patriots have the opportunity to achieve a five-peat next year, though coach White acknowledges they will need to recruit more girls to play varsity golf to maintain their competitive edge.
