What to know about Alabama’s new 483 area code
The Alabama Public Service Commission has approved adding a new 483 area code on top of the existing 334 area code in our part of the state. This is called an overlay, where two area codes are used in the same region.
You do not have to change your phone number, but you will need to start using a new way to dial local numbers.
Starting July 23, people in the 334 area code should start dialing the area code in addition to the usual 7-digit number to make a local call. The area code isn’t yet required, but this period will give callers a time to adjust.
Starting January 23, 2026, all local calls in the 334 area code must be dialed using 10 digits. You will not be able to complete a call by only dialing seven digits.
Starting February 23, 2026, new telephone lines may start getting the new 483 area code. The new 483 area code will be in addition to the 334 area code. Anyone with a 483 area code number will also be required to dial 10 digits.
Remember to start giving out your area code when you share your phone number with others. Medical monitoring, burglar alarms, security gates, call forwarding and other devices you may have will need to have the area code included before January 23, 2026.
Prices will not change. What is a local call now will remain a local call.
Dialing three digits to reach 911 and 988, as well as 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711 or 811 if available in the community, will remain the same.
