CAMPAIGN 2026: Democratic candidate Lee McInnis has announced that he will challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers in Alabama’s Third Congressional District.

The district includes Lee and Tallapoosa counties in our area and extends northward in East Alabama to include Anniston and Gadsden east of Birmingham.

McInnis is a native Alabamian and is a graduate of Homewood High School and Auburn University. He then joined the U.S. Army. After earning a Master’s Degree in Communications and International Relations at Auburn, McInnis worked in defense intelligence in Washington.

McInnis was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was awarded the two NATO medals, the Joint Staff Civil Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Civilian Service Medal and the Defense Intelligence Agency Director’s Intelligence Award, according to his campaign website.

McInnis says if elected, he wants to help repeal sections of the Trump budget that he says will take away $1 trillion in federal health care support. Education and middle class needs are among his priorities, he says.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks), was first elected in 2002.

Alabama primaries are May 19, 2026.
