Pike Road Schools hold walk to help prevent suicide
Pike Road Schools has brought awareness to Suicide Prevention Month with its 2nd annual Steps for Strength Walk.
The walk took place yesterday at the Georgia Washington campus bus loop, so that students and community members could walk the loop 11 times.
Organizers chose the number 11 because suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S.
The purpose of this event is to show people that they’re not alone in the fight against suicide and to spread awareness about how much it affects young people.
“Suicide prevention is a topic that is simply taboo in our culture and in our society, and students shy away from talking about it,” Jessica Elam, a counselor for the school system told Action 8 News. “I think that parents need to be more knowledgeable about this, of how to talk about this with their kids.”
If you’re going through a tough time, or you know someone who is, you don’t have to face it alone. Just call or text 988.
