District Attorney creates Major Crimes Unit in 17th Judicial Circuit
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
A new major crimes unit in the 17th Judicial Circuit aims to expand the reach of area law enforcement and the resources available to them.
The long arm of the law just got whole lot longer in the three west Alabama counties that make up the 17th Judicial Circuit.
“We are here to serve and protect people in Greene, Marengo and Sumter County,” said District Attorney Rachel England.
England announced the formation of a new major crimes unit Thursday morning in Demopolis.
The MCU is comprised of investigators from the DA’s office — as well as officers from police departments and sheriff’s offices located within the circuit.
“I swore them in today which deputized them. And that gives them the authority to go into all the surrounding counties here in the 17th circuit,” said England.
The Major Crimes Unit — will expand the reach of all the participating law enforcement agencies — as well as the manpower and resources available to them — to help them solve major crimes.
“It requires a lot of boots on the ground,” said England.
“And so now we can all come together from whatever city, whatever county and be on the same page and help each other out.”
England says the goal of the new unit is to make citizens safer and take violent offenders off the street.
