State of Alabama announces new poet laureate

Dozens of people gathered at the State Capitol today for the ceremony of nominating Alabama’s new Poet Laureate.

Governor Kay Ivey kicked off the ceremony by introducing Alabama’s new Poet Laureate, Dr. Jacqueline Allen Trimble, who was nominated at the Annual AWC Membership meeting after a unanimous vote. Governor Ivey made it official today by awarding Trimble her certificate.

Dr. Trimble’s work has been featured in many journals including Poet Lore, The Louisville Review, and Poetry Daily, among several others. She is also a fellow of the “National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing,” which is a national organization that promotes the literary arts across the country.

Dr. Trimble will now use her new position to promote poetry and create opportunities for people to engage with poetry in the state of Alabama and beyond.

“I’m proud of Alabama’s literary heritage, and that these efforts would ensure new generations of Alabamians build this great legacy. Again, it’s an honor to participate in this historic ceremony,” said Governor Kay Ivey.

“Poetry is one of the first ways we learn about language. It’s the way we learn to read, and it’s the way we begin to interact with language from our very beginning. Even from the time we memorized our ABC’s in a little poem. I think that it’s great for the lifetime because poetry chronicles our joys, our sorrows, our frustrations, everything, poetry is everything. Everyone needs a little poetry in their life. It’s just a great honor to be chosen as Poet Laureate, and I’m going to do my very best for the poets and the people of this state,” said Dr. Trimble.

Dr. Trimble will serve a four-year term as Poet Laureate of Alabama.
