Aces Fore Austin tournament raises money for those impacted by rare genetic disease
OPELIKA, Ala. (WAKA) – More than 100 golfers hit the links in East Alabama for a good cause.
The Austin 1st Foundation held its 4th Annual Aces Fore Austin Charity Golf Tournament at Robert Trent Jones Grand National in Opelika.
The fundraiser is held in memory of Austin Terling, who passed away in 2022 from a rare genetic brain disease.
The event also supports individuals and families impacted by rare diseases in Alabama and beyond.
“In Alabama alone, 400,000 people in our state have a rare disease, said co-founder Anthony Terling. “Our son’s disease is only known in 45 people across the world, but there are 7,000 types of rare diseases, so this is not a very small problem. This is a problem that affects 1 in 10 Americans in our country.”
“When obviously something is that rare, that’s kind of where our mission and just dreams came in,” said co-founder Lindsey Terling. “If you don’t have anybody else to talk to or have information to get from them, then how do you fix something that you don’t even know what it is? We want to create hope.”
The Austin 1st Foundation has raised more than $101,000 since 2023. Proceeds from the tournament benefit UAB and the Children’s of Alabama Foundation.
