Tornado risk Friday afternoon, more storms Memorial Day weekend

Showers and storms became widespread across west Alabama Friday morning. A few storms were rotating, prompting a few tornado warnings just southwest of our area in Clarke county. A risk for mainly brief tornadoes continues Friday afternoon, mainly west of I-65. The storm prediction center places a MARGINAL (level 1/5) severe risk generally along and west of I-65. Additionally, storms “training” over the same areas may lead to localized flooding.

Otherwise, Friday looks mainly cloudy with high temperatures in the 80s. Showers and storms eventually spread east of I-65 through this evening, but rain coverage may remain lower. Most of the showers and storms fade away Friday evening, with our area becoming mainly dry Friday night. However, the sky remains mostly cloudy with low temperatures near 70°, and plenty of humidity.

Showers and storms become scattered to numerous in coverage each afternoon of the holiday weekend. Be prepared to head indoors, as rain could be heavy with frequent lightning in any and all storms through Memorial Day.
