MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys has released updated crime statistics at his monthly media briefing today.
Graboys gave statistics for the period of April 17 through May 18. He says during that four-week time, the department recorded 55 arrests involving 90 felony charges. He says that shows that many suspects had multiple charges again them, and some of them were out on bond for previous offenses.
Graboys says something needs to be done about bond reform because too many people are getting out of jail too early and too easily and violent offenders keep reoffending.
“We have concerns because violent offenders, I worry whether they are held accountable when they can keep getting out when we keep making arrests, and what I mean by that is we will arrest an individual for a violent offense. The individual will be on bond and that individual will commit other violent offenses on bond and then we arrest him again, and it seems like a spiral and it leads to bad endings,” he said.
As for other statistics, Graboys released these year-to-date numbers:
Robberies: down 36.8%
Violent crimes: down 13%
Motor vehicle theft: down 39.8%
Total property crime: down 17.8%
Arrests: up 48.6%
He said his department has issued 1,056 traffic citations in the past month, not including red light camera tickets. He said there have been 695 traffic accidents.
Graboys said the Montgomery Police Department will hold another Open House Tryout event as it works on improving recruiting efforts. It will take place at 9AM on Saturday, June 6, at 3880 Old Hayneville Road.
