Severe risk Monday afternoon, evening; Cooler, drier Wednesday

Monday morning was dry with sunshine, but very warm and humid. Temperatures were well into the 80s and even low 90s by midday. Due to high humidity, heat index values were higher. The hot, humid air may fuel strong to severe storms in our area late Monday afternoon into Monday evening. The storm prediction center places much of our area within a marginal (level 1/5) severe risk. Damaging wind gusts are the main hazard.

An organizing cluster of strong to severe storms was near the Tennessee/Alabama state line early Monday afternoon. It continues south through the afternoon, moving into our area by the early evening. A severe thunderstorm watch continues until 7PM just north of our area for the north half of Alabama. However, the watch may be extended south at some point. Although, storms likely weaken at some point on their way south, hence the lower severe risk in our area.

Storms gradually diminish Monday evening, while the sky becomes partly cloudy overnight with lows near 70°. Tuesday looks partly cloudy with highs near 90°.
