ALDOT seeking input on another roundabout in Pike Road

PIKE ROAD, Ala. (WAKA) – As work is completed on two roundabouts in Pike Road, the Alabama Department of Transportation is seeking input on a third one along the same road.

The proposed project is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 80/Alabama Highway 126 and Wares Ferry Road.

It would convert the existing intersection, which has a flashing light to get drivers to slow down or stop, depending on which direction they are heading.  The proposal would include road reconstruction and realignment, signing and pavement marking upgrades, lighting modifications and other work.

ALDOT says construction would be performed in phases to maintain traffic through the intersection, and no detour is anticipated.

A public meeting was held last night at Pike Road Town Hall. The purpose of the meeting was to inform the public of the design features for the project. ALDOT says it’s interested in getting input from the people who use the route.

Many residents said they would prefer a traffic light instead, but Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone told Action 8 News that the intersection is complicated.

“It has the convergence of a school, two roads that were never meant to cross there and a hill coming into it. So when you think about that, it’s not as easy as a stop sign or a traffic light or a simple little solution. So, they’ve done a lot of work. They’ve put together a great plan. We’ll continue to listen to them.”

Comments are being accepted until Friday, July 10.

Work is scheduled to start to improve the intersection in September of 2027.

Not far away on Alabama Highway 126, work is being completed on two roundabouts. One is just off of Exit 16 from Interstate 85 and the other is at Marler Road. Work on those roundabouts has been going on for more than one year.
