Behind the Biscuits: Mike Murphy
Before he became the General Manager of the Biscuits, Mike Murphy began his journey with the triple-A affiliate of the Rays, the Durham Bulls. Later, he would begin work with another minor league organization out of Richmond, before stepping away from baseball for a year to pursue a career on the business side of NASCAR. After a year away from baseball, Murphy decided to get back into it, and that is how he and his family ended up here in Montgomery.
Murphy explained that each day at the ballpark is going to bring something new and exciting, and never will a day look the same. Everything that a fan sees happen on a gameday that does not involve the actual play on the field is all running through Murph.
“I would say, I’m the head coach, you know, we have athletic directors that are like our ownership and our management team, but I’m the head coach and I have a lot of offensive coordinators and defensive coordinators that work with me and then our gameday staff becomes kind of the players,” says Murphy.
While catching a game at DABOS Park, you might’ve also seen Murph on the field between innings hosting a contest or a game, another one of the many hats he wears during the course of a gameday.
“I need to be having fun to make sure that our fans are having fun, so if I can entertain myself, if get a chuckle out of it at least it’s good for me. Hopefully it carries over to our fans and they are having fun too,” explains Murphy.
And if you decide to come out to a game, you can guarantee that Murph is going to give it his all to make your experience great!
“I don’t think there’s anything below me as the General Manager. I’m not going to walk around and be like nope not my job. if it means me being our on field MC some nights, you know picking up trash whatever it is that’s stuff that’s important to me and I want the rest of our staff to be able to see that and have that same mindset of, hey we’re all in here for the purpose of creating a great atmosphere for our fans and there’s nothing below you do the little things that make the big difference,” says Murphy.
The Biscuits return home next week for a series with the Birmingham Barons.
