What The Tech: The new Apple iOS 27 update

Apple’s iOS 27 update is now available, bringing a long list of new features to the iPhone. But that does not mean everyone should rush to install it immediately.
For some iPhone owners, there are good reasons to wait a few days. Others may discover that some of the biggest new features will not work on their phone at all.
Here is what to know before tapping Download and Install.
Can Your iPhone Run iOS 27?
The first question is whether your iPhone is compatible. Apple says iOS 27 works with the iPhone 11 and newer, along with the second-generation iPhone SE and newer. That includes the iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and newer models.
If you have an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or anything older, you will not be able to install iOS 27. Apple has a full list of compatible devices on its iOS 27 website.
Not Every iPhone Gets Every New Feature
Even if your iPhone can install iOS 27, that does not mean it can use all of the new features. One of the biggest additions Apple has promoted is Siri AI, a much more capable version of Siri that can understand personal context, search information across apps and perform more complicated tasks.
But Siri AI requires an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16 or newer. And there is another reason not to update just for Siri AI: Apple says the new Siri will not be available to the public immediately. It is scheduled to arrive in beta later this year. So if Siri AI is the only reason you are anxious to install iOS 27, there is no need to rush.
Traveling Soon? You May Want to Wait
Installing a major operating system immediately before a trip is usually not a great idea. Even after months of beta testing, software problems sometimes appear only after millions of people begin installing the final version.
Those problems can involve battery life, apps, Bluetooth accessories, CarPlay or other features people rely on every day.
If you are leaving town in the next day or two, waiting until you return may be the safer choice. The same advice applies if your iPhone is critical to your job or if you depend on specialized apps or accessories. Waiting a few days gives Apple and app developers time to identify and fix early problems.
Back Up Your iPhone First
Before installing any major iOS update, make sure you have a current backup. You can back up your iPhone to iCloud or connect it to a Mac or Windows computer and create a local backup. Having a recent computer backup can be especially useful if something goes wrong during the update.
Check Your Available Storage
iOS 27 is not one single file size for every iPhone. The size of the download can vary depending on your iPhone model and the version of iOS already installed. You should still make sure you have several gigabytes of available storage before starting the update.

Settings > General > iPhone Storage
If you are running low, you may need to remove some large apps, videos or downloaded files
before installing the update.
You Do Not Have to Install iOS 27 Today
There is nothing wrong with waiting. Most major bugs are discovered during Apple’s developer and public beta programs, but smaller glitches often show up during the first several days after a major public release.
If your current iPhone is working well and you do not need the new features immediately, waiting several days can be a perfectly reasonable choice.
When You Do Update, Do It at Home
When you are ready to install iOS 27, the best time is when you are home and connected to
Wi-Fi. Plug the phone into power before starting.
The download and installation may take several minutes or longer, depending on the speed of
your internet connection, Apple’s servers and your particular iPhone.
Installing it overnight is often the easiest option.
One More Thing: Battery Life May Look Worse at First
Do not panic if battery life seems worse immediately after installing iOS 27.
After a major software update, the iPhone may spend time indexing photos, files, messages and
other information in the background.
That extra activity can temporarily use more power than normal.
Battery life often settles down after a day or two.
Should You Install iOS 27?
For most people, there is no urgent reason to install iOS 27 the moment it appears.
If you have a compatible iPhone, have a recent backup and are not relying on the phone for
travel or critical work, installing it should be relatively straightforward. But if stability matters more to you than having the newest features immediately, waiting a few days may be the smarter move.
And remember: even if your iPhone can install iOS 27, some of Apple’s biggest new AI features
require much newer hardware.
