ONLY ON 8: Political Analyst Steve Flowers says governor’s race may be closer than expected

ONLY ON 8 (WAKA) – With less than a month to go before the November 3 general election, Action 8 Political Analyst Steve Flowers says the Alabama governor’s race is getting tighter than some had expected.

For years, Flowers says a typical statewide race in Alabama is won by the Republican nominee by a 60% to 40% margin.

In this year’s governor’s race, Flowers says he expects a 55%-45% margin for Republican Tommy Tuberville over Democrat Doug Jones. He says it could be closer, though he says he is not forecasting that Jones could win.

The reason is the expected Democratic Party tidal wave nationally, Flowers says. He says while Alabama is one of the most Republican states in the country, it is not immune to trends happening elsewhere.

He also says there are some “purple” areas in the state, with a mix of Republicans and Democrats, and those people vote for the candidate and not automatically the party. He says Montgomery’s Cloverdale area is one example.
