The Rock Building has a solid foundation in Pike County History. It’s construction put residents back to work during the Great Depression.
But the building now sits empty and deteriorating. The Pike County Probate Judge Wes Allen has a plan to invest more than half a million dollars to help fix it up.
He’s proposing the county commission secure a 10-year loan since it owns the building, costing $63,000 a year. His office will contribute $20,000 a year- that’s money from a fund to archive and protect historical documents. But some wonder if tax payer money should be used to save the building.
Wes Allen said, “Hopefully it will allow us to start a conversation and look at the consolidation of all county buildings under one roof to hopefully save tax payer dollars in the future and in that we will be able to store historical documents in this building one day.”
Joey Jackson, District 6, Co-Chair Pike County Commission said, “We want something to be done to the building. We allocated $50,000 to the Rock building this year. That’s all we had.”
The Rock Building proposal is likely to be brought up at the commission’s next meeting on April 13th.
