Relations between police and communities have been in the spotlight the past year, with cases like Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

Today, a program held at Bullock County High School aimed to open up a dialogue between a younger generation and law enforcement.

Bullock County Commissioner Alonza Ellis Jr. organized the program to allow the students to not only hear from, but also interact with officers from state and local agencies.

Attorneys were also present to answer any legal questions.

One of the main messages was the need for mutual respect when dealing with law enforcement. And while their messages were serious many of the students were participating and laughing by the end.

Maurice Bistrow, a junior said, “It’s kind of rare for older people to come and explain to us how important it is so I’m very glad that they came out and did that.”

This was the first year of commissioner ellis organized the law awareness day. But he hopes to continue it in the future.
