PRATTVILLE, AL — The Kevin Turner Golf Benefit is a popular event that raises money  for the Coach a Child Scholarship Fund, which annually draws approximately $190,000 from the proceeds of the tournament.

The scholarship money is provided to people who could not otherwise participate in YMCA programs because of financial hardship.

The tournament is named for Turner, the former Prattville High (1984-86), University of Alabama (1987-91) and National Football League (1992-99) fullback who has supported the golf tournament from its inception.

“For a guy like Kevin to be so completely involved is huge,” Keith Cantrell said. “He hasn’t lived in Prattville for years but still considers Prattville his home and wants to be a part of it.”

Turner was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, in 2010, but continued to commute from his home in Birmingham to be a part of the golf tournament over the next three years. Last year, for the only time in its 17-year history, Turner missed the tournament for obvious health reasons.

“I visited with Kevin in December,” Cantrell said, “and he plans on being at the tournament in May.”
