From the West Alabama Newsroom– People in Uniontown are mourning the loss of former city councilman and long-time mayor — Andrew Hayden.
Uniontown Mayor Jamaal Hunter says former Mayor Andrew Hayden will be remembered — for breaking down barriers.
“He was a pioneer for this community,” said Hunter. “He was the first African-American elected to the city council in 1968. He went on in 1972 to run for mayor in a hotly contested race and he won becoming the city’s first first African-American mayor.”
Hayden won six terms in office and served as mayor of Uniontown for 24 years. He also served two terms in the state legislature representing House District 72. His wit and his ability to get things done made him a beloved figure throughout the community.
“He was a very beautiful person,” said Uniontown resident Fannie Wilson. “Easy to talk to, you know, always had a good conversation, always funny, but he was a beautiful person to talk to. I really liked him a lot.”
