From the West Alabama Newsroom–  Tourism continues to grow around Selma — and there are several projects underway that officials say will expand and enhance the area’s tourism industry even more.

A new 75-site audio tour is being put together for people who come to the city to sight-see. Signs at each location will provide an audio presentation about the history of the site.

“A lot of times visitors will come through town whenever the museums are closed,” said Dallas County Tourism Director Ashley Mason. “So this will allow visitors to learn more about Selma even if the site is closed.”

The Riverfront Park Amphitheater is another project that city officials expect to have a huge impact on tourism in the area. The project is about 90 percent complete — and scheduled to be finished this summer.

James Benderson is the director of Planning and Development department for the city of Selma.

“Once its live and active and ready its going to be a draw for the region, not just Selma but Selma and Dallas County and the surrounding cities and counties,” said Benderson. “We’re looking to do live performances here. We’re looking to have a variety of events annually.”

The city is also getting ready to open a new welcome center for visitors downtown.
