From the West Alabama Newsroom– The effort to find a way to save ambulance service in Perry County continues. And county leaders are working to put the final decision on the matter in the hands of the people.
Commissioner Albert Turner, Jr. says the county doesn’t have the money to provide ambulance service beyond September 30th.
Turner says legislation for an ad valorem tax referendum is being prepared for the upcoming special session of the state legislature that would let voters decide whether they want to increase taxes to pay for ambulance service to continue in the county or do without it.
Denise Timms says ambulance service is something the county can’t do without.
“What happens if there’s an emergency who is going to come and rescue us?” said Timms. “What are we going to rely on? Somebody that’s going to bring an ambulance from like 20 minutes away. That time could be too late. “
A public hearing on the matter is set for Sunday, July 19th at the Albert Turner, Sr. Courthouse Annex at 6.
