Tuskegee’s Veteran Hospital Celebrating 100 Years of Service

Tuskegee’s Veteran Hospital held its annual Veterans Day parade this morning honoring those who have served our country. This year’s event also honors the hospital’s one hundred years of service to our veterans. Tuskegee is historically known for it’s legacy and excellence. Today’s celebration is just another reason to celebrate how much Tuskegee has had an impact on this state.

“It’s a great century and we hope that the next century can be greater than this past century.” Says Vietnam Era Veteran Robert Johnson Sr. who grew up and Tuskegee and receives care at the hospital.

Prior to the abolishment of Jim Crow laws leading the way in African American care was no easy task. Black doctors and nurses worked to support the needs of predominantly black U.S. Veterans who served in the military but was unable to receive care at other hospitals.

Since its inception in 1923. The Tuskegee VA Hospital has continued to serve those Veterans who come with needs that range cover physical to mental ailments.
