Thousands kick off new year at Lacey Boyd Parade in Montgomery
It’s billed as the only New Year’s Day parade in the state.
The 19th annual “Lacey-Boyd” parade was held in West Montgomery.. to celebrate the new year, and brings families — and community together — to ring in a new year.
“In hopes of shining a light on our community and the amazing things that west Montgomery have to offer,” said Co-founder Lacey Boyd.
“We really wanted to provide something to uplift the community. And also give the families a safe, family friendly way to bring in the New Year.”
The parade also celebrated the legacy of Lowndes County Sheriff Big John Williams, who was killed in the line of duty in 2019.
“When people do amazing things their legacy deserves to live on,” said Boyd.
“I’m grateful that they do that because they didn’t have to because he was the sheriff of a different county,” said daughter, Shanice Williams.
“But that let’s me know that he touched the heart of plenty and many in all other counties and areas. And I really do appreciate them for supporting him.”
The parade-goers were encouraged to register to vote — and to stop the violence in the community.
“Let’s come together in love and peace. We need to uplift one another. Our days here are not long. And every single day we need to make it count,” said Boyd.
The event also featured food vendors — and a concert following the parade.
