Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., remembered at Montgomery church he once led

The life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was remembered at a Montgomery church on the national holiday in his honor.

A service was held today at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church on Dexter Avenue downtown. It is the church where he served as pastor from 1954-1960, leading not only the congregation but also pivotal moments in the Civil Rights Movement.

The theme for this year’s program was “Transforming the Cultural Climate Through the Study and Practice of King’s Philosophy of Nonviolence.”

The Sidney Lanier High School Choir performed.

The guest speaker was Rev. Dr. Derwin Perry, pastor of Goodship Missionary Baptist Church in Millbrook.

A parade was held in downtown Montgomery following the service.
