SAVING SELMA: Dallas Co. Jail rebuild makes progress
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
The work rebuilding the Dallas County Jail continues to make progress — and phase one of the project is nearing completion.
The jail was one of the many buildings destroyed in January of 2023 — when an EF-2 tornado hit Selma.
The tornado ripped the roof off the building and caused extensive water damage inside.
The first step in the process of rebuilding the facility is almost finished.
“They’re just about finished with the roof, they’ve been working on the roof now, a little over two months. Once we get it, what they call dried in, so no more water can come on the inside and so forth, they’re going to start working on the inside,” said Sheriff Mike Granthum.
“You gotta make sure it’s dry. Because there’s no use of doing anything in the inside of water is still gon’ come in.”
Granthum says the interior work could take years to complete. But when it’s finished, the jail will be a state of the art facility.
