Opelika business heavily damaged in fire

A home building company in downtown Opelika has been heavily damaged by fire.

The Opelika Police Department says at about 11:28PM last night, it got a call about a possible fire in the 400 block of 8th Street. That is the location of Stone Martin Builders.

Upon arrival, police and fire crews saw heavy smoke in the area and began clearing the buildings while attempting to find the source. As of 5:30AM today, police say the fire was contained, but they are monitoring hotspots.

Police say it’s unclear the extent of damage to the surrounding buildings. Once the site is clear, the fire department will investigate the cause of the fire.
