Montgomery celebrates Veterans Day with downtown parade, ceremony
The city of Montgomery celebrated veterans and those still in uniform with a huge Veterans Day celebration.
The city brought back the Veterans Day Parade this year after being gone for about a decade.
The parade started at the top of Dexter Avenue near the Alabama Capitol steps and made its way down to the Court Square Fountain.
Many marching bands, members of JROTC, dance groups and veterans participated in the parade, as parade goers lined the streets.
After the parade, the city held a ceremony at Riverwalk Stadium which paid tribute to active and retired servicemen and women from all branches of the military.
At the beginning of the ceremony, 99-year-old World War II U.S. Army veteran Joseph Simon was recognized and honored for his service.
The event was put on by the city, the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs and many others. The acting director of the Central Alabama VA Healthcare System Valerie Russell was the keynote speaker.
An MH-139 Grey Wolf military helicopter landed inside the stadium so people could see it in person. The helicopter is one of several that have arrived at Maxwell Air Force Base for military training programs.
