Montgomery Wheelchair Tennis Open draws record turnout

The Montgomery Open Wheelchair Tennis tournament drew a record 38 athletes to Lagoon Park this weekend.

The national tournament, organized by the nonprofit Dream Court and its volunteers, featured both singles and doubles competition across four coed skill divisions, plus a juniors division. Champions received cash prizes.

The event has grown steadily since its inception five years ago, when it attracted fewer than 20 participants. Attendance increased from 25 to 30 to 35 competitors in the following years before reaching this year’s high.

“My favorite part of the weekend is seeing players that have been participating in the past,” said Dream Court founder and director Jessica Weyreuter. “And seeing players return and bring their wives or their children. And seeing a bunch of volunteers from Montgomery serve and help the community.”

Weyreuter emphasized the importance of competitive opportunities for athletes who are wheelchair bound or cannot play a regular sport.

“It gives them a chance to come out, to travel, to meet all their friends, and, of course, have a physical activity,” she said.
