Former Alabama, Auburn quarterbacks help host annual Kevin Turner Golf Tournament

The 28th annual Kevin Turner Prattville YMCA Golf Tournament brought out hundreds of golfers, including well-known former quarterbacks from Alabama and Auburn.

Former Alabama quarterback Jake Coker and former Auburn quarterback Jeff Burger helped host the annual tournament yesterday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill in Prattville.

Around 300 golfers took part in the tournament to raise money and to remember Kevin Turner.

Turner was a Prattville native who played for Alabama from 1988 to 1991 and then had an eight-year career in the NFL. He died of ALS and CTE in 2016. Before his death, he attended the tournament, which started in 1998.

“You know, you have 300 golfers out here,” Coker said. “You know the community supports this. I just like to see it go in the same direction it is right now. I know it’s been growing, so you know, it’s a good cause.”

“If you look at the turnout — 78 teams, I mean it’s phenomenal,” Burger said. “I mean, you got a full day of events here and you’re getting the participation of the community and people are supporting it and backing it. I don’t know how much bigger it could be. I think Kevin had a vision and I think he’s being fulfilled today.”

Proceeds from the tournament help fund the Coach a Child campaign, which provides financial aid to make YMCA services available to everyone regardless of their ability to pay.
