Salvation Army of Montgomery finally finds new permanent home

After three years of moving around temporary locations, the Salvation Army of Montgomery has finally found its permanent home.

It is now located on Carter Hill Road, at the former Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints property, next to JAG High School and across from the Midtown YMCA.

The building will be the Salvation Army’s administration headquarters, offering opportunities for youth, seniors, the disabled and the homeless. While the building is being renovated, the food pantry, clothing closet and worship center are open.

The Salvation Army is planning to find a new location for its shelter and soup kitchen.

“This building, this permanent home for us, will give us the ability to have a firm foundation and to grow upon,” Capt. Thomas Johnson, the local corps officer, told Action 8 News. “We are still, at this very moment, still looking for that permanent location for sheltering as well as hot meals each and every day. So, we’re still identifying where that will be in Montgomery and we’ll find that perfect place, and the Lord will lead us to that perfect location that’ll be okay with everybody.”

The Salvation Army has been without a permanent home after the City of Montgomery bought its longtime headquarters on Maxwell Boulevard to demolish as part of the Montgomery Whitewater project.
