Alabama Public Service Commission President Twinkle Cavanaugh says she’s stepping down to take a job with the Trump administration.

Cavanaugh says she will step down on Sunday, June 1, after 13 years as president of the PSC.

“I certainly would not be leaving the job you entrusted me with if it were not for an amazing opportunity to serve in President Donald J. Trump’s administration as the USDA Alabama Director of Rural Development,” Cavanaugh said in making her announcement.

“Though my title will change, my heart remains the same – rooted in faith and conservative principles, grounded in gratitude and devoted to the people of Alabama. I know our brightest days are ahead of us!”

The Alabama Public Service Commission oversees utilities in the state.

Cavanaugh was elected to the PSC in 2010 and became president of the three-member commission in 2012. Before her election, she was the first woman to lead the Alabama Republican Party.

It will be up to Gov. Kay Ivey to name a replacement.
