Law Enforcement Officers Get Domestic Violence Training in Selma

From the West Alabama Newsroom–  Law enforcement officers get domestic violence training in Selma. The training comes in the wake of a recent church shooting in the city — where a man shot his ex-girlfriend — their infant child — and a minister.

More than a dozen police officers learned how to respond to one of the most complex and difficult issues facing communities everywhere.

The training session was sponsored by SABRA Sanctuary, an emergency, temporary shelter in Selma — for victims of domestic violence and their children.

Officers learned about the cycle of domestic violence and how to spot the warning signs.

“We just want to train our law enforcement on how to handle this and how to see the signs when they go on a domestic violence call,” said SABRA Sanctuary Executive Director, Nancy Travis.

The training was conducted by former Montgomery police lieutenant Steve Searcy — who is the Law Enforcement Training Coordinator for the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

“About 85-percent of the victims are killed when they are leaving the relationship,” said Searcy. “About 85-percent of the victims are killed by a handgun and there’s been prior incidents of domestic violence.”

SABRA Sanctuary has a 24 hour crisis hotline. The number is (334) 874-8711 — or you can toll-free at 1-800-650-6522.
