Pike Co. High School Senior Flies Into History Books

A Pike County High schooler is first in flight.Â
Â
School officials believe Colton Johnson’s the first in the nation to earn his private pilot license through a public high school program. He went through training with Trojan Aviation- part of a partnership with Troy University and Mauna Loa Helicopters in Hawaii.Â
Â
Colton’s in the first group of students from Pike County Schools to be sent through the university’s program free of charge.
Â
Colton Johnson said, “It’s just amazing because I got to do this without pay as well as I’m going through college right now and it’s just a head start on life basically.”
Â
The Pike County Schools partnership with the University and Mauna Loa allows students like Colton to also receive an associates degree free of charge. It’s worth anywhere from
$10-15,000 in flight training at no expense to the high schooler.Â
