Gov. Bentley Responds to Criticism of License Offices Closures

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has told a congresswoman that Alabama’s closure of rural drivers’ license offices was a business decision to deal with limited resources.
Bentley sent a letter Tuesday to U.S Rep. Terri Sewell responding to Sewell’s criticisms. Sewell has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate since Alabama requires photo ID to vote.
The governor called Sewell’s comments “ill-informed.” He says the state provides free voter IDs in every county.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announced last week that it would no longer send driving test examiners to satellite offices. The closures impact the issuance of new licenses. County workers handle renewals.
The offices, which were staffed one to three days a week, issued between a few dozen to a few hundred licenses and permits in 2014. (Copyright 2015 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.)
