Local farmers markets welcome summer with Alabama-grown fruits and vegetables

July 4th is right around the corner, and while some people are checking out the firework stands, others are getting their fill at local farmers markets.

“Right now the peaches are great. The best peaches are in now. They’re the freestone peaches and they’re in right now.  Watermelons are good. I have to say everything Alabama is good right now,” Jean Wright at the Alabama State Farmers Market in Montgomery told Action 8 News.

Some folks say they prefer shopping at farmers markets instead of groceries stores for their fruits and vegetables.

“Fresh produce and anything fresh is better than frozen or canned goods and anything like that. The closer it is the better. You get reasonable prices, fresh produce and you don’t have to drive too far away,” Clifton Lovejoy of Montgomery said.

Even visitors from other places in Alabama find themselves having a good time at the farmers markets in Montgomery.

“I love making the trip here. In fact, I’m from Fairhope, Alabama, and when I come up here for work and business, I always make a special trip and occasionally come here,” Blake White said.

At the farmers market on Fairview Avenue, Flora Brown says that despite all the rain we’ve gotten the past several weeks, farmers are still finding success with most of their crops.

“Everybody sees the sun come out and they get ready for plums and peaches. The okra has not been producing like we’ve wanted it to because of the rain, and okra likes heat,” Brown said.
