Gov. Kay Ivey proclaims October 12 as Alabama Farmers’ Day
Gov. Kay Ivey has signed a proclamation to declare October 12 As Alabama Farmers’ Day.
Her proclamation highlights an essential role that Alabama’s farmers play in sustaining families as they contribute $77.3 billion annually to the state’s economy.
“Our farmers feed the nation and the world,” Gov. Ivey said. “We want to do all we can to support them.”
“These people cannot continue to farm if they cannot make a living and pay their bills,” Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate said. “We’ve got to have farmers, and food security is national security, and so those two messages — maybe it’ll resonate with some people.”
Alabama ranks among the top producers of freshwater fish, poultry, peanuts and pecans, while also placing in the top ten nationally for cotton production.
