Alabama State University has announced that a 5,000 square foot YMCA fitness facility will be coming to campus.

In addition to the facility, a partnership between ASU and the YMCA of Greater Montgomery will feature a variety of programs to create accessible and inclusive wellness opportunities for ASU students and the broader Montgomery community.

The programs will include youth leadership development, sports camps led by ASU coaches, mental wellness workshops and specialized fitness and educational classes.

“This partnership between Alabama State University and the YMCA of Greater Montgomery represents more than a shared investment in facilities and programs; it reflects our mutual commitment to uplifting our students and our community,” ASU President Dr. Quinton Ross, Jr., said.

“By working together, we are creating spaces and opportunities that will foster health, growth, and strengthen community connections for generations to come. This is Hornet Nation at its best — leading, serving, and transforming lives.”

In addition, joint outreach initiatives, such as health fairs, service projects and wellness education workshops will directly address local health challenges and strengthen community ties by expanding access to meaningful wellness opportunities.

The partnership aims to increase awareness of health and wellness resources while promoting participation across the campus and community.

The YMCA will involve the renovation of a building at the south entrance of the campus off Carter Hill Road and Harris Way. It’s expected to open in spring of 2026.
