St. James students hold annual community day
Students at St. James School in Montgomery are holding their annual Community Day, with some of them volunteering at the Heart of Alabama Food Bank.
About 25 members of the senior class packed boxes at the food bank. The seniors were told that they needed to make and prepare 400 boxes, working as a team to fill them, put them on the line and and then stacking them on pallets for shipping.
The students said they are thankful to have had this opportunity to help out so many people and it warms their hearts to know that the families receiving the boxes are going to open them and say thank you.
“I’m very happy that we’re doing it, because this does mean a lot to me,” Madison Jackson, a St. James senior, said.
“In this setting, we have an opportunity to talk with them about food insecurity in their own communities, students that are experiencing food insecurity, church members, neighbors that are just like you, and so we have 70% of those that we serve here at the food bank are employed, so these individuals that are receiving assistance look just like everybody else. We want the students to be aware of what is happening and the need in their community,” Heart of Alabama Food Bank Chief Development Officer Varina Mead said.
Also as part of community day, 8th-11th grade students visited eight additional locations. Middle school students are completing service projects for Reality and Truth Ministries, The Salvation Army and Mercy House.
Additionally, students are writing letters to veterans that will be delivered to the Alabama Veterans Hospital and making goody
bags for the residents of area nursing homes.
