Andalusia business organizes food drive to help residents after SNAP cuts

A local business in Andalusia is doing its’ part to help feed those who may be in need this holiday season.
Following cuts to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program in November, Meagan Turner and her mother Christy Norris-Turner of Golden Rule BBQ and Grill, decided to organize a food drive to help those who have lost the benefits.
Christy understands first-hand what’s its like to need help.
“I have been on food stamps at one time in my life, when my children were really young,” says Christy Norris-Turner. “And I get how much of a blessing it was to me at that time. We just feel like if we give back to our community, our community comes and gives back to us so much. And we’re so blessed to have this great opportunity to serve everybody. And these people that help us and come every day, we wanna help them.”
Meagan Turner says they are collecting non-perishable food items that can be dropped off at Golden Rule BBQ and Grill in Andalusia. Other businesses have also stepped up to offer help, including Born to Bolt and Lifted Salon.
Items needed include spaghetti, pasta, peanut butter and jelly, grits, oatmeal, canned meats, soups, and rice.
Organizers say it’s the least they can do to give back to a community that gives so much all year round.
“We knew that we couldn’t go grocery shopping for multiple different families,” says event organizer Meagan Turner. “I’m grateful that it blew up the way it did, because I want to be able to help as many people as we can. But I don’t think either of us expected as much feedback as we got.”
Sacks of food are distributed every Sunday.
