Uniontown non-profit continues fight against hunger
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
A Uniontown non-profit continues to distribute food in the community — in the wake of the recent SNAP crisis.
The CHOICE Resource Center in Uniontown hands out tons of food — to about a thousand people in Perry County each and every month.
“CHOICE is a non-profit organization. It’s actually an acronym for Choosing-to-Help-Others-In-our-Community-Excel,” said Founder and Executive Director, Emefa Butler.
Along with its mobile food pantry — the center also operates a food program — expressly for senior citizens over the age of 60.
“We realize that there’s not a grocery store in Uniontown, so you can only imagine how important it is for us to be doing this work, in partnership with the Selma Area Food Bank,” said Butler.
“So, that people only have to drive around the corner to get access to a full meal in most cases.”
“Having a partnership like we’re here with CHOICE today,” said Selma Area Food Bank Executive Director Ryan Johnson.
“It encourages us because we literally get to see the boots on the ground, to see how true effort is being invested in the communities and momentum is being built in these times.”
Times of food insecurity — and a recent SNAP crisis.
“With the SNAP crisis we saw an immediate 35% increase in attendance across our food agency events. Each agency handled it a little bit differently. But it did show that we have a very reactive network. We have a group of partners that are very flexible, very adaptable. And we’re very thankful for how our agencies performed under pressure under the last few weeks,” said Johnson.
