Dr. Lynda Blackmon Lowery is being remembered in Selma for her lifetime of dedication to the Civil Rights Movement.
Dr. Lowery died on Christmas Eve at the age of 75.
She is remembered as a Selma foot soldier, Bloody Sunday survivor, author, educator and mental health professional.
Dr. Lowery was just 14 years old when she marched for voting rights in Selma. She was jailed nine times, brutally beaten on Bloody Sunday in 1965 and went on to become the youngest person to complete the full Selma to Montgomery March that year.
She dedicated 27 years to mental health service and, decades after the Selma movement, chose to tell her story through her acclaimed memoir, Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom. Her testimony educated generations of students and readers across the country and preserved the living history of the Voting Rights Movement.
Dr. Lowery was also a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and the Order of the Eastern Star, both of which will be honoring her life alongside family, community members and civil rights leaders.
