“Buckets over Bullets” event held to spread awareness about gun violence

The Multiplex at Cramton Bowl was full of people this past Saturday for the “Buckets over Bullets” event.

The event was a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for elementary, middle, and high school youth. Organizers say that its purpose is to bring awareness to gun violence, building character in young people, and strengthening the relationships of young people.

Before the tournament, there was a group conversation about gun violence and how destructive it can be to the younger generation. The event lasted from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

“In fact, we’re excited that we have a lot of young people here. That was the goal. That was the plan. A part of us emphasizing young people is because we don’t just believe that young people are the future, we believe that they are the now, so we have to start investing in them now. When you’re doing that, you’re actually doing the work of prevention and not just intervention. Intervention is good, but if we can get them early, on the right track early, then we can prevent a lot of those things that, unfortunately, we read on the news sometimes. So, we just want to give more positive stories, and we believe that sowing seeds early is what helps you do that,” said Taurus Montgomery, founder of “Buckets over Bullets.”

The 1st place team won $500, and the 2nd place team won $300.
