Karen Carnely’s salon in downtown Opp is a great place to talk about the latest happenings. Carnely and her patrons often share opinions on what could make Opp a better place to live.
“More things for the young youth to do, while not in school,” resident Wellington Clarke shares. Clarke stopped into Carnely’s salon to get his haircut and catch up on the town news. “If the young folks had more things to do, instead of being out on the streets, I think it would be worth staying in Opp with your kids.”
“I would like to see more businesses come to Opp. Jobs, you know, for people here,” says Carnely herself, as she takes a turn in the beauty chair. “Instead of having to drive out of town to work. And that way people would spend more money here.”
The latest news for the city includes the announcement of Councilman T. D. Morgan throwing his name into the race for mayor. Morgan is challenging incumbent John Bartholomew, who has held the office since 2012.
“Our city’s got to come together again, like we were say ten years ago,” Morgan says. “When neighbor helped neighbor, and people helped people. You know, you meet somebody on the street, you know everybody shakes hands when you meet them on the street. That don’t happen anymore.”
“He wants to bring the city back ten years… “What it used to be,'” Bartholomew says. “A CEO would want to bring the city forward ten years, twenty years, and progress the city. We’re not looking for de-gress, we’re looking for progress. And we’re looking for unity.”
Carnely, for one, is thankful election season is far away. She still is not sure which candidate is best for the job.
“I mean, I’d have to think about it, because they’re both really good people, and they’re there if you need them, with any kind of problem, you know?” Carnley says.

Qualifying dates for the candidates are July 9th through the 15th.
