Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting in Hale County

GREENSBORO, Ala. (WAKA) – The State Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation in an officer involved shooting in Hale County.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Thursday when an officer with the Greensboro Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Blount Street.

During the course of the traffic stop, the driver, identified as 64-year-old Robert Williams, of Greensboro, presented a firearm and shot the officer.

The officer returned fire hitting the suspect.

Williams was taken to the Hale County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities say the officer was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor issued the following statement:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured Greensboro Police Officer and his family as he continues to receive care. What began as a traffic stop, which is never routine, quickly turned into a life-threatening situation, underscoring the dangers officers face every day. Incidents like this weigh heavily on the entire law enforcement community. We are praying for the Officer’s full recovery and will continue to stand alongside the family and fellow officers during this difficult time.”

SBI launched the investigation at the request of the Hale County Sheriff’s Office.
